On the defensive… but on the attack
So I was on sabbatical, I was taking a break, focusing on work and moving and all the insanity that comes with it but I keep running in to people who need education on my favorite subject, the one thing I believe in over all, the right of every man, woman and child to own firearms to defend themselves. their homes, their country and the rights and freedoms we are so privileged to have in this country that we are so fortunate to live in.
“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”
-Second amendment to the constitution
So what is that saying? Well it’s fairly simple. It’s empowering the common man with the right and the duty to own weapons for the purpose of defending their nation and their rights and freedoms. “the security of a free state” isn’t talking about being attacks by forgein nationals intent on our death and conquest. It’s talking about defending ourselves from the oppression of goverment. It’s talking about defending ourselves from any one who would enforce their will on us and strip us of our rights and freedoms. The second amendment is the guarantee for the other rights and freedoms.
Seems fairly cut and dry, so what’s the issue? what’s the problem? Well it’s interesting to note that everyone focuses on is stopping certain kinds of guns, keeping weapons out of people’s hands that seem for lack of a better term “scary”, they are scary because these tools allow the people to fight back and defend themselves and those who would oppress us don’t like that.
Those who would take our weapons away place all sorts of bans and restrictions on our right to keep and bear arms even though it fairly obviously says that those same rights shall not be infringed. They use misleading and scary terms and out right lie about things to make people think their voting to prevent crime and protect ourselves and out law enforcement officers when really we’re only hobbling ourselves and our ability to keep ourselves safe.
For example steel core ammunition also known as “cop killer” bullets has been banned in this country, the real story is that steel core bullets are no more lethal then any other bullet, and that most ammunition labeled as a “cop killer” has never harmed a law enforcement officer. This is an example of fear mongering specifically designed to cripple our ability to own guns and purchase ammunition for reasonable prices.
Then there’s something that came up in my last debate with an acquaintance of mine, the assault weapon ban, to the uneducated the assault weapons ban sounds perfectly reasonable, assault rifles are scary things that go full auto and etc right? Dead wrong the assault weapons ban is a ban on guns with a “military” appearance. It’s an ugly gun ban is what it is. The out and out of it is that it’s plain stupid, and it’s clearly unconstitutional, if you read the second amendment. The whole idea is for us to be able to keep a “well regulated militia” now if you cant be sure here’s the definitions from dictionary.com
mi⋅li⋅tia
–noun
1. a body of citizens enrolled for military service, and called out periodically for drill but serving full time only in emergencies.
2. a body of citizen soldiers as distinguished from professional soldiers.
3. all able-bodied males considered by law eligible for military service.
4. a body of citizens organized in a paramilitary group and typically regarding themselves as defenders of individual rights against the presumed interference of the federal government.
These are all correct definitions but they all have a collective point, it’s a military or paramilitary group, a group that is, according to the constitution a vital part of the freedom of our nation. So if it’s a military group that we as citizens are supposed to be purchasing weapons for, as a duty to protect our rights, our nation and our homes why is owning “military” weapons a problem? especially when all so called assault weapons are no more or less dangerous then any other gun, they just have a specific look to them. So if I spray paint my AK pink does that make it less scary? what if I put a smiley face on it? It’s not changing the fact that it’s a mid-caliber semi-automatic rifle, no more or less dangerous then the semi-auto sporting rifles of the same or larger caliber available for purchase so what’s the fuss about?

The Constituion is pretty cut and dry, isn’t it? Makes you wonder what all the fuss is about. There are so many infringements on our second amendment rights happening right now, it’s hard to keep track. Thank you for citing at the beginning of your post the right for every man, women and child to defend themselves. I am particularly passionate about women understanding the need to have the skills necessary to protect themselves and their families. http://tinyurl.com/dcpn6b and http://tinyurl.com/cysj5p
